CONTACT ENERGY
- Winner 2014 ACC Workplace Safety Tania Palmer
POWER SAVERS

Contact Energy is one of New Zealand’s largest electricity generators and retailers so their 1000 or so staff are always on the go. And the nature of their work means they need to be on their toes to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Contact manages workplace heath and safety risks through its Stay Safe Mate programmes, working toward a goal of zero harm. And, says General Manager Health, Safety and Environment Tania Palmer, it’s working.

“Our accident and injury rate over the past twelve months has dropped markedly, and that’s was despite a significant increase in risk exposure due to major construction projects we had going on around the place.”

Workplace injuries dropped 32% from the previous year with a total recordable injury frequency rate (TRIFR for short) of 4.0. “We’ve set a target of 3.2 for the 2014 financial year, which is another 20% improvement on last year,” Tania says.

Some of the credit has to go to Tana Umaga. He’s been fronting the Stay Safe Mate programmes, encouraging staff and contractors to take personal responsibility and exercise judgement and accountability for their own worksafe practices.

The second campaign called Life Savers, creates heightened awareness of the 11 highest risk activities and 11 Life Saving Rules were developed to do exactly that – save lives.

Bringing heart and head together has been, and will continue to be the focus for how Contact continues to lead safety.
