Waste Minimalists

Foodstuffs NZ has launched a radical new, holistic approach to waste management. Primarily aimed at New World and PAK’nSAVE supermarkets the programme already has over 50 stores on board nationally, including six early starters in the Wellington region. The supermarkets are working hand in hand with Envirowaste to dramatically reduced waste to landfill and are aiming at an ambitious 90% recycling rate at the end of the initial 24 months.

In the first four months of 2015 the six Wellington region stores had diverted a staggering 327 tonnes of materials away from landfill and into recycling.

Materials that were previously going into rubbish bins are now being segregated reused and reprocessed, going to new uses such as stock feed, pharmaceuticals and packaging.

New markets are emerging as a result of the consolidation of material streams. “Bringing together multiple independently operated businesses lets us supply quantities that are economically viable to process,” Foodstuff’s Sustainability Manager Mike Sammons says. “For example, there was no market for 50 litres of used cooking oil a week from a single store but there is for 1000 litres a week.”
