Located in the heart of the Wairarapa, Matahiwi Estate prides itself on being an award-winning family-owned winery.

Combining an extensive hands-on approach with the latest technology, Matahiwi produces Sauvignon Blanc, Pinots Noir and Gris, Chardonnay and a Late Harvest, exporting 80% to Australia, the UK and Europe, China, Hong Kong, Japan and Canada. The winery is currently investing in the US due to the soaring demand for New Zealand wine and they're looking at Brazil too.

Being flexible helps. Matahiwi works with its customers to meet the changing market - like extending the product range, creating new brands.

Last year Matahiwi gained new distributors and clients in all its sales territories and also won a tender to supply Japan Airlines with its Pinot Noir. And locals don't miss out, as visitors to Wellington on a Plate will attest.

Matahiwi thinks of itself as a boutique winery that’s just a bit larger than the others, according to owner Alastair Scott. "We may be one of the larger producers in the Wairarapa, but we keep to the age-old principles," he says. "Making wine is an art, and Jane Cooper, our winemaker, likes to let the essence of the vines shine through."
