NEWTOWN FESTIVAL – Finalist 2014 Vibrant Gold

NEWTOWN'S BIG KNEES-UP

Newtown Festival’s Street Fair has grown over the last 18 years to become New Zealand’s largest free annual outdoor street festival, attended by over 75,000 people.

The mainstreet is closed to traffic for a Sunday in early March. Inside the safe pedestrian-only site, the 10 stages with 76 performance groups and 360 stalls are part of a carefully designed series of outdoor rooms and precincts bringing together bands, buskers, local retailers, community groups and stall holders into a welcoming, partying, celebration.

"Being able to publicly occupy the core heart of the suburb which is usually devoted to 25,000 vehicles and 420 buses each Sunday, creates an exciting sense of freedom," Newtown Festival Programme Co-ordinator James Coyle says. "We end up with a totally relaxed space for locals and visitors to enjoy the food, the music and all the stalls."

The core team of 3 design and manage the temporary festival city and lead the part time paid crew and many volunteers who create the Newtown Festival. All are very generous with their time, creative talent and professional skills, creating miracles on a shoestring.

Year after year those who perform, contribute and volunteer are doing so to build community connectivity and social capital, inspiring our community to be proud of their magnificent, vibrant Newtown.
