Every year, over 17 days, Visa Wellington on a Plate showcases the best of Wellington’s culinary and hospitality businesses, from farm to plate and across a huge range of products and prices.

“It’s about unveiling new culinary adventures, “VWOAP director Sarah Meikle (pictured with colleague Ruby) says. “And we want to make Wellington one of the most recognised food cities in the world.”

This year will be the event’s 10th birthday. Last year saw over 8,300 tickets sold to 117 Festival Events, 36,000 Dine Wellington menus consumed, 112,000 burgers devoured and 5,500 cocktails tastefully downed.

HIGHLIGHT - CARNIVAL OF LIGHTSCarla Steed
Dead right nightlights

Lower Hutt’s new carnival of lights, HighLight, was a shining success with more than 120,000 people attending the inaugural event over Labour Weekend 2017.

Produced by Hutt City Council, the event transformed Riddiford Garden with more than 20 eye-catching light installations and awe-inspiring live performances as well as entertainment for the whole family and a nightly fireworks display.

“It’s all about creating happy memories and experiences for the community,” event director Carla Steed (pictured) says. “We had a range of objectives but giving something for people to remember and be proud of was top of the list.”

Organisers hoped for 40,000 attendees and were overwhelmed by the final tally of 120,000 punters over the four nights.

CubaDupa is New Zealand’s largest street festival, celebrating the vibrancy and spirit of Cuba Street and the wider community.
It’s uniquely Wellington and something that couldn’t happen anywhere else, Artistic Director Drew James (pictured) says. “It’s a stunning event, where the line between performer and audience gets blurred very quickly as everyone joins in and takes to the streets!”
This year, CubaDupa had 250 individual events over 19 hours with 150 acts on 6 stages. Next year will be even more spectacular, harnessing the cream of Wellington’s creative technology. Hold on to your hats people!

BEERVANA Beth Brash

Beervana, that annual celebration of all things beery, had its start in the old Overseas Terminal back in 2001 with just 200 punters. These days, it’s held in the Westpac Stadium so they can fit everyone in – 14,000 attendees, 67 breweries and 452 beers on tap.

“It’s just getting bigger every year,” 2017 Beervana manager Beth Brash (pictured) says. “Last year three of the four sessions were sold out, with 96% of people keen to return this year, which is amazing!”

ALL WHITES vs PERU  Winston Reid
~ A qualified success
NZ Football had to work extra hard to ensure the All Whites’ World Cup playoff against Peru at Westpac Stadium last year was one of the biggest football matches ever seen in New Zealand.
“FIFA didn’t confirm the fixture dates until 14 October,” Commercial Director Carl Jackson says. “That gave us less than that four weeks to organise the event with just six event staff pre-game and 17 event staff on the day.” A packed stadium watched the match in person with another 33 million watching on telly in Peru alone.
