Earthlink started in ’95 and believed then that making a difference for people with mental health and drug & alcohol concerns, was to work with the strengths and skills people had and bring these skills to the workplace across many and variable work domains.
To support this in 2000, Earthlink became a Private Training Establishment (PTE) and today runs a range of courses aligned to work-force development.
Earthlink employees 16 full-time and 40 part-time staff and 70% of staff have come through the organisations vocational development programs. Earthlink also supports 32 clients in private employment.
In the early days Earthlink concentrated on horticulture, but expansion now includes operating the recycling bays at Silverstream landfill under contract to Hutt City, and inorganic waste collections across the Hutt Valley – along with commercial contracts for councils and corporates.
"Each business division has an environmental focus at its core," Earthlink's CEO Shirley Cressy says. "They're not business units with 'green practices' - they exist to support the environment first and foremost. The revenue stream then goes to support our clients and staff."
The Recycling to Retail operation recovers around 500 tonnes of recyclable waste otherwise buried in landfills each year, and the inorganic collections are so efficient that nothing ends up being dumped.
And Earthlink is currently working with the HCC to develop recycling stewardship programmes with businesses.
