Fancy Foot Work
Wellington Phoenix Football Club entered the Australian A-league in the 2007/08 season. In September 2011, the Phoenix was taken over by Welnix, a consortium of some of Wellington's most successful and influential businessmen.
Since then, the results of much hard work are now evident. From a single team the Club has expanded in Wellington to include a first team, a reserve team, a youth football academy, plus a Wellington Phoenix Soccer School in Auckland.
The strengthening of the Wellington Phoenix brand has in parallel attracted a strong suite of sponsors, most significantly Chinese firm Huawei as principal partner, a move that’s helping open other business doors between New Zealand and China.
The Wellington Phoenix is more than just a Football Club, GM David Dome says. “For an organisation with significantly less resources compared to our Australian counterparts, it’s not a place for the faint-hearted! Everybody works together with the long term vision of building a truly internationally linked brand that will grow the club, feed local businesses with the spin offs and add to the country’s and city’s connections around the world.”
