WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA - Winner 2014 Vibrant Gold

The first Wings Over Wairarapa air show was hosted by the Masterton based New Zealand Sport & Vintage Aviation Society in 1999 and has grown significantly since then. The operation has evolved and over 24,000 visitors attended the 2013 show.

In New Zealand, Wings is second in numbers only to the long running Warbirds Over Wanaka. It certainly rivals any other New Zealand show for display content and reputation and is now a significant event on the Australasian aviation events calendar.

Wings is more than an air show, aiming to provide visitors with a full experience and value for money event which they want to return to year after year. Therefore, it’s important to keep the flying line-up and activities varied to give people a new and local Wairarapa experience.

“Flying is the core business but entertainment is the core goal,” says Wings Over Wairarapa Community Trust Board Chair Bob Francis. “Long-term, we’re looking at strengthening our alignment with Wanaka and Avalon in Australia. We’re already a marquee event in the Wellington region - our aim is to get the world to sit up and take notice.”

Wings Over Wairarapa appeals to a remarkably broad market. Figures show that just over half of attendees are aircraft enthusiasts - the rest are there because it’s a great day out and fantastic entertainment. That’s encouraging in anyone’s book.
