Aulana® & The Midas Rug by Noble Bond

Finalist - Discovering Gold

Johnston and the Golden Fleece

Aulana® is a world first. It is the only natural fibre – high quality New Zealand wool - coloured solely with gold, in a variety of rich natural shades. That may sound like magic, but it’s actually nanoscience.

Simply put, minute particles of gold are bonded to the fibres. Different sized small particles reflect different wavelengths of light, so by careful control of the technology a range of colours can be achieved.

Chemistry Professor Jim Johnston from Victoria University, came up with the idea in 2006. As an internationally recognized expert in the field of nanoscience and from a farming background, he was keen to innovatively combine the nanoscience of gold with the special chemical structure and high quality of NZ wool and develop high value bespoke rugs, apparel and accessory textiles for international luxury markets. “I thought this would be a great opportunity to add significant value to a portion of NZ wool and move it further into the luxury product areas” he says.

Noble Bond is the name of the company set up to take Aulana® to the world. Demonstration samples of the aptly name Midas Rugs have attracted huge interest at trade fairs in the US, the UK, Germany and China and are enjoying a high profile in leading fashion magazines and international Interior Design studios.
