James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor
Finalists - Green Gold
Hospitality with a Heart
The 4.5 star 268-room James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor plays host to a diverse range of customers and while providing great customer service and quality accommodation, the hotel places great importance in meeting its environmental and social responsibilities, working closely with Eco Pocket NZ.
The measures include minimising waste production, recycling and re-using, composting kitchen waste and maintaining a minimal level of carbon emissions. The James Cook Hotel uses energy efficient lighting throughout the building and ensures the day-to-day business of running a hotel leaves the environment untouched.
“We’re very much thinking globally and acting locally,” Denise Thornton, Green Team Sustainability Coordinator says. “We give preference to local product and services and employ people living locally as well. And every year we give our environmental policy a thorough review.”
It’s paying off - in 2014 the hotel was awarded gold level environmental certification from both Qualmark and the international environmental certification agency EC3, the first hotel in Wellington, and just the second in New Zealand, to be awarded both of these certifications.
