Matrix Homes was founded on the belief that Kiwis are paying far too much for housing. The initial thought was to provide worker accommodation in Christchurch, but that idea grew into developing affordable houses for all New Zealanders.

Using jigs and a factory approach to construction Matrix can build a house in 12 days, with the base model starting at $89,000.

Matrix produces two modules - a one bedroom 52m2 module, and a two bedroom 70m2module – that can be combined in dozens of different ways. They can be added to later as a family grows, or even removed for use by another family.

Matrix CEO Sean Murrie says that a typical house has around $100,000 of labour in it. “Through some clever thinking, innovation and using lessons learnt in other industries we’ve got that figure down to less than $10,000. This is not the kind of prefabricated building you remember from school. These are proper timber homes people can be proud of, homes we at Matrix would love to live in.”
