Motu is a small team of world-class economic and public policy researchers undertaking independent work that directly impacts government policy, and is lauded and referenced around the world.
Growing from an idea hatched by a group of Kiwi graduate students at Harvard University in the early 1990s, Motu now has 20 staff and is the top-ranked research organisation in New Zealand, according to the Research Papers in Economics website. Director Adam Jaffe is the top-ranked economist in Oceania/Australasia.
One of Motu’s guiding principles is its commitment to freely disseminating research findings. Over the past year, Motu research has been used by the Word Bank, Treasury, Z Energy and the International Carbon Action Partnership.
In parallel with the initiation of major new research programmes, Motu’s revenue and research staff grew significantly in 2014, with the addition of two new research fellows and three research analysts. For the fiscal year that began in July 2014, Motu will have research revenue of about $1.6 million, an increase of about 30% over the previous fiscal year.
