SOCIAL ENTERPRISE SHOWCASE WCC Logo

in association with Wellington City Council

Each year the Social Enterprise Showcase in association with Wellington City Council pays tribute to three inspiring Social Enterprises in the Wellington region. The 2017 recipients are Earthlink, Little Yellow Bird and Pomegranate Kitchen.....

EARTHLINK

Earthlink’s been around since the mid-90s – its mission is to provide high quality education, training and supported employment to people with mental health and other disability concerns.

Their first project - the horticultural division – now trains up workers for outside employment as well as within the business.

The Recycling to Retail project, launched in 2002, sees product collected via Silverstream landfill or donated, cleaned, refurbished ready for sale through Earthlink’s recycling and apparel shops.

Earthlink Apparel division repurposes end of life corporate clothing – over 89 tonnes of garments have been recovered so far. And the free Curtain Bank division makes sure anyone in need can get their windows properly covered.

To date, Earthlink helmed by CE Shirley Cressy has supported over a thousand clients into paid sustainable employment.

LITTLE YELLOW BIRD

Led by Samantha Jones  Little Yellow Bird is a supplier of ethically made workwear. As a social enterprise, the company was founded with the vision of improving social and environmental sustainability throughout the garment supply chain.

Working closely with farmers, sewers, designers and artists, Little Yellow Bird creates bespoke business apparel in a way that won’t compromise workers or the environment. Now supplying uniforms to over 50 companies in New Zealand, Little Yellow Bird is fast becoming the leading supplier of ethically made corporate workwear.

Specialising in organic cotton, Little Yellow Bird products are made without the use of chemicals or pesticides and cotton is grown relying primarily on rain water. With profits re-invested to support community development projects in East India, this company is clearly more than the standard uniform supplier.

POMEGRANATE KITCHEN

The food you're eating should make you feel good, inside and out. That’s the ideas behind Pomegranate Kitchen, an organisation providing group catering and individual lunch delivery across Wellington.

Rebecca Stewart and her team make food that is fresh, fun, interesting and healthy. And strongly influenced by a range of different cuisines… because all the Kitchen’s cooks are from a refugee background.

Refugees face major hurdles when they arrive in New Zealand, and finding a job is one of the biggest.  Pomegranate Kitchen offers training and work while providing delicious food for Wellingtonians.

As well as learning the skills and undertaking catering work the new arrivals – from places like Syria, Ethiopia and Afghanistan - are involved at every level of the Pomegranate Kitchen business, from cooking and kitchen management to admin, design and governance on the Board.
