WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL - Finalists 2014 Team Gold
FUN IN THE CITY
The Wellington City Council is made up of 15 elected representatives - the Mayor and 14 Councillors - whose job it is to set the city's overall strategic direction, approve budgets, make bylaws, policies and plans aimed at achieving that direction.
They're assisted by the Council's chief executive and 1600 staff, who provide advice, implement Council decisions, and look after the city's day-to-day operations.
As an employer of around 1600 full time, part time and casual staff, the Council is committed to employee health and wellbeing. Sitting alongside a robust Health and Safety Management system is the Council's Health and Wellness Strategy, with four Strategy themes: Heart health, Emotional and Social Wellbeing, Musculoskeletal health, and Drug, Smoke-free and Alcohol.
"The themes were devised from international, national and our Council health statistics," says Trish Knight - Advisor, Health Safety and Wellness. "Contributing to these themes are healthy eating workshops, blood pressure monitoring, subsidised gym memberships, yoga, pilates, support of physical events such as Iron Maori, positive mental health workshops, early intervention physiotherapy, manual handling workshops, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation. We also offer flu vaccinations, mole mapping and are currently planning gout education workshops.
Stories are shared via videos of individual health journeys to inspire others.
