What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do In The Shadows is an award-winning mockumentary film about a group of vampires living in Wellington, produced in 2012 by two of New Zealand’s most well-known documentarians, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi.
The resulting film is a raw, unflinching look at the lives of the undead community, and no stone is left unturned; from hunting victims and draining them of their blood to more mundane activities like paying rent and keeping the house tidy.
What We Do opened in the US on February 13 this year and by March 13 was sitting on 19th spot of independently released movies nationwide.
“To date we have grossed over US$3.4 million in America,” producer Chelsea Winstanley says. “The movie was almost entirely self-funded. The success of Boy (NZ’s highest grossing local film ever) and Flight of the Conchords had given the team a good profile, and because the budget was … realisitic, potential backers could see this was not a big risk.”
As at October last year, What We Do was the 7th highest grossing NZ film of all time in New Zealand taking NZ$2.5 million.
