WHITIREIA - FACULTY OF HEALTH - Finalists 2014 Supporting Gold

Established in 1986 Whitireia New Zealand is a government owned tertiary institute known for its high student success rate and culturally diverse student body. Over 100 programmes of study are offered to 8500 students covering certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and master’s.

The Faculty of Health makes up 19% of the student body at Whitireia with over 1,600 students opting to study a health related programme, ranging from introductory level through to postgraduate. The Bachelor of Nursing degree was the first to be offered, in 1994. The faculty has grown hugely and is today known as a leading multidisciplinary healthcare educational provider.

2013 saw the opening of a new $17m purpose built 21st century state-of-the-art health education facility at the Porirua campus, one that includes four new modern simulation training suites, developed in partnership with Laerdal.

From basic skill acquisition to the more complex scenarios, students are exposed to a variety of simulated learning experiences throughout their education to support the development of the required professional clinical and reasoning skills.
“Simulation is a powerful tool when it comes to teaching,” Faculty Dean Kathy Holloway says. “It gives students a chance to gain skills and confidence without any of the risks.” It is the future of healthcare education.

Whitireia is the only national provider of education for Royal New Zealand Plunket Society and is consistently highly commended in regulatory audits by Nursing Council and Social Work Registration Board for partnerships with industry and student support.
